About our Name
The Kamogawa Church is named after the Kamo River, which has flowed through central Kyoto since the Heian Period of Japanese history.
The Kamo River has always been an essential source of water for daily living (food and water) and irrigation farming. Furthermore, the Kamo River is a part of the Yodo River system, including Lake Biwa, which is a big part of the water basin drainage system for the entire Kansai Region of Japan. Without this essential water system and plentiful supply of water, the Kansai Region would never have been able to develop into the prosperous region it is today.
Just as the Kamo River has contributed to and sustained bountiful life and a prosperous living environment throughout the Kansai Region of Japan over the centuries, the Kamogawa Church, based on its Christian roots, aims to contribute to and maintain a growing and sustained spreading of kindness and goodness, giving and loving throughout Japan. (See the Kamogawa Church Mission and Philosophy).
